Material research: Red cabbage
This project focuses on using red cabbage as a material. It consists of three parts. Part 1 is about experimenting with the material itself, where I cooked, baked, and dried red cabbage to see what the results would be. These experiments resulted in mold. From these molds, I made scans and created a zine. Additionally, I can use these scans for future projects.
Part 2 is about creating a typeface from pieces of cut red cabbage. I arranged the pieces into the shapes of letters and then scanned them, converting them into digital forms in Adobe Illustrator.
In Part 3, I explored the main use of red cabbage, which is primarily for food in the kitchen. My research also focused on the role of women in the kitchen and the slogans that were used in the past, such as “Het enige recht wat een vrouw heeft is het aanrecht.” Translated: The only right a woman has is the kitchen counter. This kind of sexist slogan was also present in advertisements. Inspired by these ads, I tried to connect these themes with red cabbage and translated them into posters. I also used my typeface for the misogynistic texts.
